This month, we go into the thick of it with Elly, our fabrics fanatic!

After a brief hiatus, The Faces Behind The Furniture is back! I sat down with Elly this time, who has been in multiple roles over her 20 years at Wood Bros.

What roles have you been in since you started at Wood Bros?

I started as a marketing and PR assistant and then executive. I am now a director of the company, and have also worked with showrooms in North Carolina, Shanghai and here in Hertfordshire.

My skills lay mainly on the creative side, and I have a background in photography, styling and writing, so I have helped to organise and produce the photoshoots for the brochure, website and marketing materials, and continue to do so.

What is your current role, and what does it involve?

Most recently it is selecting and buying fabrics. This involves research at trade exhibitions, visiting mills and tanneries, selecting fabrics to suit our market and current trends, as well as creating the fabric stories and updating swatches for our retail market, interior designers and showrooms.

I hear you have some Wood Bros furniture in your own home – what do you have?

I have the Hertford table and chairs in my dining room, which is perfect for entertaining family and friends.

I also have 2 Pickering Sofas in Moon wool; one in Tweed Mint and one in Fleck Mushroom, and a Pickering Armchair also in Fleck Mushroom. I love the Bronte by Moon throws, and about 6 of them have made their way home with me!

And if you could only buy one more piece of Wood Bros furniture, what would you choose?

I think it would have to be the Deepdale sofa in Varanesi Bark velvet. I think it would add a bit of luxury to my home, and it is so comfortable! I would have to try to keep my muddy dog off of it though!

Tell us a little bit about Margot and why you chose her!

Margot is my 2 year old Daschund! When my husband and I moved from London 15 years ago, we both really wanted a dog (this was a big prerequisite for the marriage!). We had a really busy lifestyle though and realised that we couldn’t have a dog straight off. However, 2 years ago when the children were a bit older, we thought it was the right time to indulge ourselves!

We chose her because of her cheeky personality, beautiful glossiness and lovely temperament!

Tell me something interesting about yourself!

I love painting – I paint with watercolours at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Cambridge and the stunning scenery in Snowdonia. I have even had a go at painting Margot! I would love to try my hand at printmaking.

Which 4 people, living or dead, would you like to have at a dinner party?

That’s a hard one! I would say Claudia Winkleman because she is funny and quirky, Yotam Ottolenghi (he can do the cooking!), Michael Caine because he is charismatic and a legend, and Sue Perkins because she is completely bonkers!

And finally, if you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

A Day In The Life by The Beatles, because I love singing along to it with my family on our trips to Wales. I never get sick of it!

Thank you for your time Elly!

Our next instalment will be next month as usual, so watch this space! In the meantime, feel free to look at some of our previous blog posts by clicking here, or take a look around our website!
