Having the right furniture at home is important, but if your living space layout is not well thought through then the benefits of your beautiful wooden bureau or character oak coffee table can be lost. To make sure your furniture always sings and your living spaces are as relaxing and welcoming as they can be, we’ve compiled a short guide to help. Read through our suggestions for planning your living space layout and take your home’s interior to the next level.

Make a plan

One of the best ways to start planning your home’s living space layout is to do just that – make a plan. Measure your space and draw out the dimensions to give you a clear idea of the scale you are working with. You can also make cutouts of the main pieces of furniture like sofas, TV tables and armchairs to let you play with alternative layouts without having to do any heavy lifting. This may not lead to an interior design epiphany, but at the very least it will get your creative juices flowing, and having full and accurate measurements for your room is always important.

Avoid cluttered furniture

Most of us are guilty at one time or another of just placing our furniture where it fits and forgetting about it. Many of us rarely take the time to properly plan the functionality of a room to make sure it is in tune with its purpose. You shouldn’t have to step over your furniture to get out of a room and you should be able to enter and exit with ease. With this in mind, it is a good plan to ensure there is always ample clearance between furniture. For example, your coffee table and sofa should always be 30-40 centimetres apart, and you should aim to have a metre of walking space from one end of the room to the other.

Make each other the focal point

Most living rooms have the TV as the focal point. That means that all the chairs, sofas, and tables are placed with the TV in mind. While that might be great for movie night, it isn’t the best for family gatherings and socialising. It also limits your layout choices. Opt instead for a more conversational set up with sofas and chairs facing each other. Put the TV on a bookcase or otherwise out of the way of the fireplace, and you’ll find that not having a giant black mirror dominating your space leads to a more welcoming one.

Make the most of your space

Even the biggest living spaces can feel jam packed if they are not planned properly. Think about the items you do store in your living area and consider if you need them there. Do you need a huge array of DVDs and CDs on display, or would your home benefit from having them stored elsewhere? Would more vertical storage make more sense than long bookcases and shelving units? Also, depending on the number of people at home, would a smaller 2-seater sofa make sense? How about a smaller coffee table. If you want to accentuate the space you have, the tried and tested solutions work well. Mirrors opposite windows make a room feel larger as does light and neutral decor.
