Getting Young People into Business

The CVS for Broxbourne and East Herts have launched this year’s Dragons’ Apprentice Challenge which encourages young people to experience entrepreneurship. The premise is that students come up with a business idea and are given startup capital for the idea. Junior schools receive £50 whilst secondary schools receive £100 which they must then turn into profit.

Each team is paired with a Dragon – a local businessperson who acts as their mentor for the duration of the event. Barclays, East Herts Council and Stansted Airport are just some of the companies participating.

Ian Richardson is the Chief Officer of CVS for Broxbourne and East Herts. He says:

“This is our 5th year of delivering the challenge in junior schools. We’re delighted it continues to create a culture of entrepreneurism amongst our young people.”

The scheme helps to make thousands of pounds in profit which is subsequently donated to local charities.

Wood Bros are keen to be involved in local projects such as this and are sponsoring the “Overall Winner” award for this. Our Marketing Manager, Vicky Hallam, was one of the judges at the finals of the Junior Challenge in January. The winning team for the East Herts division was “Dragon Breath” from Hertford St Andrew Primary School. Congratulations to them and all of the other schools who entered!

Senior Dragons’ Challenge

The winner of the Senior section will be announced on 18th March. We also sponsored the Best Presentation Award for this event. Our CEO James Sheffield will present the award in a ceremony at the Southern Maltings in Ware. There are over 100 students from 11 schools in this challenge, and we wish you all the very best of luck!
