I’ve been looking for more ideas for blog posts, so I asked everyone in the office to come up with something. Some are furniture related, some are not. Some are good ideas, some really are not. But one bright spark came up with the idea of letting staff have a go at writing about their interests. Less work for me, more variety for you. It’s a win-win! I decided that Karen could kick things off. Karen was only too keen to give it a go, so over to her!
Karen – Accounts
I have been working at Wood Bros for almost 14 years and am all things accounts. When I’m not working I have 2 main interests. One is running quizzes for charities, clubs, schools and other groups wishing to raise money for good causes and the other is home checking and raising funds for a local dog rescue.
The dog rescue I volunteer for is Mutts in Distress near Bishops Stortford, Herts. I mainly do the home checks for potential adopters within my area and have done so for just over 6 years. I got involved as my daughter wanted to help at the kennels at the weekends. As I work full time I couldn’t give this type of commitment due to domestic chores needing to be done! Upon further enquiry they said they needed home checkers. This I could do as and when I was free, so I signed up. I did some training and was then qualified to go it alone. It’s very rewarding when you are told that a long term dog in kennels has gone to one of your home checks and now has their forever sofa and new family!
They hold Fun Days twice a year at the kennels. This is solely for people who have adopted a dog and those actively involved in the rescue like myself. You’ll find me on the alcohol tombola stall (hic) guarding the bottles! These Fun Days can raise up to £3,000 which is fundamental to the dogs coming in that need veterinary treatment before being re-homed.
I am very passionate about dogs having grown up with 3 beagles. Since leaving home back in the 80’s, I’ve had the pleasure of owning a Jack Russell cross Corgi, 2 Staffordshire Bull Terriers and my latest rescue is Bandit the English Bull Terrier. By far, Bandit has the biggest personality of all of them; he’s shouty, he’s stampy, he’s clumsy and he’s incredibly lazy and stubborn (a bit like me!) but we absolutely adore him! He even has his own Instagram page which you can follow @banditbully
Let’s Get Quizzical
I compile and present the quizzes myself free of charge and have been doing them now for almost 30 years. In 2019 alone I held around 25 quizzes and raised approximately £25,000. Some of the charities/groups I have helped are Herts & Essex Air Ambulance, Help for Heroes, Alzheimer’s Society, RSPB, Special Olympics athletes and Teenage Cancer Trust. I also host them to help individuals doing the Three Peaks, London Marathons, Great Walk of China and other energetic pursuits in order to raise money for their chosen charity.
My quiz questions range from being fairly easy to the more challenging type of questions. In fact I’ve left a few below for you to try out! Just hover your mouse over the question to find the right answer.
