Dragons’ Apprentice Challenge

Getting Young People into Business The CVS for Broxbourne and East Herts have launched this year's Dragons' Apprentice Challenge which encourages young people to experience entrepreneurship. The premise is that students come up with a business idea and are given startup capital for the idea. Junior schools receive £50 whilst secondary schools receive £100 which they must then turn into profit. Each team is paired with a Dragon - a local businessperson who acts as their mentor for the duration of the event. Barclays, East Herts Council and Stansted Airport are just some of the companies participating.Ian Richardson is the Chief Officer of CVS for Broxbourne and East Herts. He says: "This is our 5th year of delivering the challenge in junior schools. We're delighted it continues to create a culture of entrepreneurism amongst our young people." The...

The Faces Behind the Furniture: Lloyd – Sales

The Tables have Turned! Lloyd - Sales By now I'm sure you know how this blog series works - each month I choose a colleague from a different department and ask them a variety of questions, giving you an insight into what goes on behind the scenes and what makes people tick. But this time I found myself sat in the hot seat, with Lisa asking the questions! How long have you been at Wood Bros, and what is your job here? One year and one month. Not long compared to the rest of you!I help with sales, looking after customers and the showroom, digital and social media, and events such as our factory sales. I am also the office feeder - I am always bringing in chocolates or cakes! I'm a bit of a technophobe, so explain...

Red Leather, Yellow Leather

Not all leathers are created equal It's no surprise that leather is a perennial favourite for upholstery, and it is a great choice for lots of reasons. Quality is Key There are many types of leathers used for upholstery from pure aniline top grain, which is the most expensive, to fully corrected leathers. Our Veneto leather is a semi-aniline high quality leather which we believe gives us the best of both worlds; the beautiful natural leather is treated with aniline dyes for a rich colour and increased durability. Veneto also features a wax pull-up which gives the leather a mellow and subtly aged appearance, ideal for upholstery.  Testing, testing To ensure that our leather is strong and long-lasting, it undergoes 3 tests: Flex test The leather is flexed up to 50,000 times to to...

The Faces Behind the Furniture: Elly – Fabrics

This month, we go into the thick of it with Elly, our fabrics fanatic! After a brief hiatus, The Faces Behind The Furniture is back! I sat down with Elly this time, who has been in multiple roles over her 20 years at Wood Bros. What roles have you been in since you started at Wood Bros? I started as a marketing and PR assistant and then executive. I am now a director of the company, and have also worked with showrooms in North Carolina, Shanghai and here in Hertfordshire. My skills lay mainly on the creative side, and I have a background in photography, styling and writing, so I have helped to organise and produce the photoshoots for the brochure, website and marketing materials, and continue to do so. What is your current role, and what...

Favourite Festive Fare

Christmas has been creeping up on us for some time now, and it is hard to believe that it's so close now. I can already taste the succulent turkey, the roast vegetables, and my personal favourite: pigs in blankets! The one thing that divides a lot of people though is Brussels sprouts. In a survey in the office and warehouse, 71% of people said that they like Brussels sprouts, while 29% said that they didn't. Perhaps it depends on how they are cooked. And with that, we bring you some of the office's favourite festive recipes for vegetables, the turkey (or vegetarian equivalent) and the dessert! The Vegetables Heather recommends Brussels sprouts with chestnuts, butter or slivers of steamed carrot for a beautiful mixture of flavours, but I think Georgie has trumped that slightly with the...

The Faces behind the Furniture: James – Design

Our next instalment takes us into the design department As you may know by now, in an effort to bring back that personal touch, we are interviewing people from different departments all across Wood Bros to find out what makes it tick. This time, we interviewed James, a designer, to find out what makes the design department tick. How long have you been with Wood Bros now, and what is your role? I've been here for 3 years and 9 months now, and I am Head of Design and Development. Sounds fancy! What does it involve? Pretty much what it says on the tin - I design products for Wood Bros including items for the Old Charm collection and our Sofa Collection. You can read a bit more about this in our design blog - From Page to Product. ...
